October 2012

As usual, we had a packed October with plenty of Fall fun. Not only did we go to a Fall Festival, Amanda participated in a marathon, we visited the fire station, got pumpkins, decorated pumpkins, celebrated Simchat Torah and of course, Halloween.

We made it through the dreaded Hurricane Sandy unscathed. We were home for 2 days with nothing but a little rain; the worst of it hit overnight. We didn't lose power, which was good, but we were stuck in the house most of the time.

Robin has started to write her name, though it's not quite legible. She is also starting to identify letters and sounds. Amanda is moving right along in 1st grade and is loving it, even though she is not in the same class as her best bud Charlie. At least she sees him in aftercare each day.

**Overheard this month**

Robin:  "I'm Amanda's little sister."
Amanda:  (with pride) "Yes, you are." (pause) "And sometimes you're a pest."

Fall Festival

We hit the Fall Festival with our Havurah friends. All of the kids loved the slides, rides, and pumpkins.

The car ride home:

**Overheard this month: Amanda**

"Did you know my name is both an answer and a question? What do you call a grown up boy? 'A man.' 'Duh?'"

Simchat Torah
A celebration of the Torah, complete with singing, dancing, and flag waving! Click Here for a video (18 sec).

**Overheard this month: Robin**

How old is Robin? "Tha-Ree!"

Open House at the Fire Station
Our local firehouse had their annual fun-day during Fire Prevention Week. Grammy came with us!

As always, the obstacle course and opportunity to use a real fire hose was the most exciting part of the day.

We saw Charlie there, too. This incredible team worked together to put out the fire.

Noah's Ark Tot Shabbat

The kids all got to wear animal headgear (Charlie was there, too!)

**Overheard this month: Robin**

Stacey:   "I lost my balance."
Robin:   "How will you find it again?"

Hurricane Sandy = Craft Time!

Hurricane Sandy came our way this month and had us trapped in the house for 2 days.
Luckily, we had a rainy day stash of arts & crafts project to dip into.

Marine Corps Marathon Kids' Fun Run

We had a blast at the Fun Run this year. The weather cooperated (unlike last year's freezing torrential downpour).

Picking the Perfect Pumpkin

**Overheard this month**

After Robin copied what Amanda had said:

Amanda:   "She just wants to look up to me. I don't like it."
Robin:   "Amanda, I just think you're awesome."

Bust Out The Knives!

While Hurricane Sandy raged outside, we made good use of the garage and carved a pumpkin.

Click Here to see us liberate the pumpkin guts from their orange prison (56 sec).

Did Somebody Say Candy?

Amanda created her own costume and dressed as "Becky the Baseball Fairy," modeled after the characters in her favorite book series about alliterative fairies and their talents and/or likes.
Robin wanted to wear the Spiderman costume, but didn't want to be Spiderman, nor Spider-girl, nor Spider-fairy. She was "Spider-human."
